Best Flooring Options For A Kids Room

One of the most popular questions that we get asked is: "what is the best flooring option for a kid's room?" There really is no right or wrong answer to this question. It is a personal choice.

However, for a kid's bedroom, there are certainly some advantages/disadvantages to using different floors. In this article, it is our goal to discuss the flooring options you might be considering, and how each floor type might affect your child.

Best Flooring Options For A Kids Room

If you have little kids, a carpet might be your best option. With the softness of the carpet material, as well as the underneath carpet pad, this flooring type will give your child the best protection when it comes to those trip-and-fall moments.

Kids love to play on the floor. Carpet provides a soft surface for your kids and their toys. Having carpet in the room will also help with ambient noise that can be made by your kids and their friends from jumping around in the bedroom, or playing with toys that hit and roll on the floor.

One of the downsides to carpets is dealing with spills. Carpet is harder to clean than a hard surface floor, and can easily stain and get dirty.

If you are looking at the carpet, one option for a kid's bedroom is to purchase a Mohawk SmartStrand Carpet. We talk about SmartStrand in one of our other blog posts, SmartStrand Carpet Cleaning Guide. This article does a wonderful job of walking you through the benefits of SmartStrand Carpet and discusses why it is such a popular carpet choice for families.

In a nutshell, SmartStrand Carpet is a great option for a kid's bedroom, because it has the following benefits:

  1. Dirt Resistance

  2. Wear Resistant

  3. Odor Resistant

  4. Stain Resistance

SmartStrand Carpet comes in a variety of styles & colors. You can pick out a carpet that is really thick and plush, or you can pick out a carpet that is dense and firm.

Another great carpet for a kid's bedroom is the Shaw R2X System. Shaw Flooring treats many of its carpets with the R2X System, which similar to SmartStrand Carpet, makes the carpet stain resistant and provides incredible soil and dirt wear and tear protection.

We have a very good article, Ideas For Basement Remodel, that goes into more detail about the benefits of the R2X Stain & Soil Resistance Treatment.

In general, carpet is an excellent choice for a kid's bedroom. Especially little kids. When shopping, ask your flooring professional about Mohawk SmartStrand Carpet, as well as Shaw R2X Products, and they can show you a ton of samples to look at for your bedroom.

When buying carpet, don't forget about your carpet pad. You want to make sure you purchase a pad that has moisture protection. Kids spill drinks. The last thing you need is water getting in your carpet pad and causing mold and mildew issues. We recommend consulting with your local flooring professional to get advice on the best carpet pad for your project.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is the hottest product in the floor covering world. If you go into any retail floor covering store, you will see that a large percentage of their showroom space is dedicated to luxury vinyl plank displays.

Luxury vinyl plank (referred to as LVP) has the following benefits:

  1. Easy to install

  2. Easy to clean

  3. Waterproof

  4. Scratch Resistant

LVP comes in a variety of board widths and lengths and has a huge selection of styles and colors. For those customers that do not want carpet, LVP would be an excellent choice.

One negative with LVP in a kid's bedroom would be the hardness of the floor. When accidents happen, and a child falls, LVP could cause more issues than carpet.

However, many people simply like hard surface floors over carpet. For these customers, we think LVP is the best choice.

There are so many different LVP products, the best option when shopping, is to make a decision based on the color and the price. Many of the LVP products will come with an attached pad. We would recommend searching for one of these products for a kid's bedroom. It will just give you a little extra protection.

Hardwood flooring is a timeless product option that continues to do a wonderful job of adding value to a home. Many customers love hard surface flooring and will put hardwood floors in all of their bedrooms.

Similar to Luxury vinyl plank, hardwood can be painful when your child falls, but it continues to be a very popular product for families.

One option for a kid's bedroom is to cover a portion of your floor with a nice area rug. This can help with falls, and provide your child with a little extra floor protection.

You can purchase hardwood flooring in both an engineered product or a solid product.
