BEST MOP FOR HARDWOOD AND LAMINATE FLOORS

Updated: Sep 10, 2022

Best Mop for Hardwood and Laminate Floors

Have you ever spent several hours mopping your hardwood or laminate floors, only to find that they’re still not as clean as you want them to be? While some mops are better than others at picking up dirt and grime, the best ones also have a few key features that make them effective tools in your hardwood and laminate cleaning arsenal. Follow these tips to choose the best mop for your hardwood floors, so you can spend less time scrubbing and more time enjoying your beautiful floors!

Jump to our 7 best mops for hardwood and laminate floors

5 Steps In Choosing the Right Floor Cleaner

Step 1: Know your floors. Laminate, hardwood, tile, and stone are all different materials that require different cleaning methods. For example, a laminate floor requires a cleaner with different features than hardwood floors so as not to dull its finish. It’s also best to avoid cleaners with bleach on laminate or hardwood floors as they can yellow or dull their color over time. Tile is porous and easily stained by acidic products like vinegar and lemon juice, so make sure you know what you’re using before you clean it!

Step 2: Know your mops. The best mop for your floors depends on how much moisture you need when cleaning them. Laminate and hardwood floors should not take on a lot of moisture. If they do, they can warp or swell, causing permanent damage. For laminate floors, it’s best to use a dry mop with microfiber pads that lift dirt without soaking up too much water. If you have wood flooring, avoid using steam cleaners or mopping systems that leave behind excess moisture as they can cause warping over time.

Step 3: Know your cleaning solution. The best mop for laminate and hardwood floors is a dry mop, but you’ll still need a cleaning solution. For laminate floors, use a cleaner with a neutral pH like vinegar or lemon juice as it won’t dull or yellow its finish over time. If you have wood flooring, avoid cleaners with bleach as they can discolor or damage your floor over time. For both types of floors, make sure your cleaner is free of dyes and fragrances that can stain or leave behind residue.

Step 4: Know your mop head. The best mops for laminate and hardwood floors are microfiber because they don’t leave behind excess moisture, but you’ll still need a mop head that works with your cleaning solution. For laminate floors, look for a soft microfiber pad that won’t scratch or dull its finish. For wood floors, look for a microfiber pad that can absorb more water without leaving behind residue or streaks.

Step 5: Know your cleaning schedule. The best mops for laminate and hardwood floors are dry, but you’ll still need to make sure you clean them regularly. Laminate floors should be cleaned weekly with a dry microfiber pad with a professional cleaning solution. If you have wood flooring, it should be mopped every other week with a microfiber pad and water-based cleaner. It’s also important to know that laminate and wood floors can be damaged by high-pressure steam cleaners, so avoid using them if possible!

3 Important Things To Know About Your Floors

Important thing #1: Laminate floors are different than hardwood floors. Each type of floor requires a certain type of mop. Both require dry cleaning methods.

Important thing #2: A dirty mop can make your floors dirtier, not cleaner. Cleaning with a dirty mop spreads bacteria and other harmful germs around your home, which can lead to health problems down the road. So it’s important that you clean your mop regularly and properly before you use it on your wood or laminate floors.

Important thing #3: It’s best to avoid using water on wood or laminate floors unless absolutely necessary (like in case of an emergency). Water is one of the most common causes of damage to these types of flooring, so it’s better if you keep them away from water as much as possible—especially when using a steam-powered mop!

One parting shot about knowing your floors: Make sure you are cleaning and maintaining your floors correctly! Each type of flooring requires a different kind of maintenance. A good rule of thumb is that hardwood flooring should be cleaned at least once a week, and laminate flooring should be cleaned at least once a month. Follow these guidelines, and you’ll have clean floors that look great for years to come!

7 Tips For Deep Cleaning

Tip #1: Vacuum. Vacuuming is a great way to get rid of dust and dirt, but it can’t do much when it comes to removing ground-in grime. For that, you need a mop. A microfiber mop head is best because it attracts and holds onto dirt better than cotton. It also doesn’t leave behind any fibers or threads that can scratch your flooring.

If you have hardwood floors, choose a mop with a long handle so you don’t have to bend over as far while cleaning. If you have laminate floors, use a dry microfiber cloth instead of a wet mop so as not to damage your flooring with moisture and chemicals (see tip #2).

Tip #2: Clean up spills immediately. If you have hardwood floors, a microfiber mop is great at cleaning up spills because it doesn’t leave behind any fibers or threads that can scratch your flooring. It also picks up dirt and grime really well, which makes it perfect for removing dried spills. For laminate floors, use a dry microfiber cloth instead of a wet mop so as not to damage your flooring with moisture and chemicals (see tip #3).

Tip #3: Use only a professionally recommended cleaner on laminate floors. You can purchase these cleaners at your local floor covering store.

Tip #4: Use a microfiber cloth instead of paper towels. Paper towels are too rough on laminate floors and can leave behind fibers that can scratch your flooring. Microfiber cloths are softer and won’t leave behind any threads or fibers that can damage your flooring.

Tip #5: Vacuum between cleanings to keep dirt from building up in between deep cleanings. If you have hardwood floors, use a vacuum with soft bristles so as not to scratch your flooring. For laminate floors, use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment or no attachment at all so as not to damage your flooring.

Tip #6: Use a microfiber mop with a long handle. If you have hardwood floors, use a microfiber mop with a long handle so you don’t have to bend over as far while cleaning. For laminate floors, use a dry microfiber cloth instead of a wet mop so as not to damage your flooring with moisture and chemicals (see tip #7).

Tip #7: Avoid using cleaners that contain harsh chemicals or bleach. These can damage your flooring if they come in contact with it. If you do need to clean your floors with something other than water, make sure it’s recommended by your floor covering store and follow all instructions carefully.

Which Electric Floor Cleaner Should You Get?

If you have hardwood floors in your home, it can be frustrating when they get dirty. The best electric floor cleaner is different depending on whether you have wood floors or laminate floors. You should consider how frequently you clean and what other types of surfaces are found in your home before making a decision. Cleaning with a floor cleaning solution by hand may be best if you have pets because dust and hair can clog up a vacuum cleaner and create more work for you. Dry cleaning by hand may work better if you want a faster clean-up time.

Floor cleaning solutions tend to be specific to certain types of floors, so check with your manufacturer when you are shopping. If you have hardwood floors, a general-purpose hardwood cleaner solution may be best. For laminate floors, use a specialized cleaner designed specifically for laminate flooring.

Difference Between General Cleaners and Specialized Solutions: Some manufacturers produce general cleaners that work on both hardwood and laminate flooring; however, using a cleaner designed specifically for your type of floor is typically better.

Many products made for cleaning hardwood floors are infused with polymers and can restore a damaged finish. To use these products, lightly dampen a mop head and wring it out. Then, spray some floor cleaner on your mop head and then spread it around using a clean cloth. General cleaners aren’t necessarily bad for laminate floors; however, specialized solutions can help remove spots without leaving behind residue.

As a general rule, the best electric floor cleaner should be based on your lifestyle and type of flooring. If you want a quick clean-up time or are looking for something that can remove pet hair from hardwood floors, an upright vacuum may be best. If you have laminate floors or just want something that is easier to maneuver on different types of surfaces, a cordless stick vacuum may work better. No matter what kind of flooring you have in your home, it’s important to choose a model that is right for your type of floor.

How Often Should You Clean Your Floors?

How often you clean your floors depends on how dirty they get. For example, hardwood floors should be cleaned every week or two (more frequently if there are pets in your home). With laminate floors, you’ll want to consider how heavy of a foot traffic area it is and then plan accordingly. On average, you’ll want to clean your laminate floor once a week or so.

For both hardwood and laminate floors, you’ll want to clean them first with a dry brush and then a damp mop. This will help remove dirt, grime, and other debris that could scratch or otherwise damage your floors. When cleaning your hardwood flooring, avoid using vinegar-based or ammonia-based products—these can be damaging to some types of wood. For laminate floors, avoid sticky cleaners or steam cleaners as they can stain your flooring if not done correctly. Instead, use cleaning solutions specifically designed for laminate surfaces. After cleaning your hardwood or laminate flooring, it’s important to buff out any streaks left behind by mops and wet cloths before they dry.

Finally, remember that while you can use any mop on your hardwood or laminate flooring, it’s important to choose a mop that is right for your flooring type. For example, if you have a large area of hardwood floors in your home or office, then you might want to consider an electric mop with a wide cleaning path and multiple cleaning heads. However, if you only have one or two rooms with hardwood floors and need something more compact and easy-to-use (and cheaper), then look into a manual mopping system instead.easy to use

How Do you Prevent Scratching?

Some mops are better at cleaning than others. The best mops for hardwoods and laminate floors have a very soft pad made of microfiber that won’t scratch your floor or leave streaks behind. It's crucial to buy a high-quality microfiber pad so you can rest assured your floor won't get damaged.

Avoid using anything that has sharp points or metal parts, as these can scratch your floor.

The best mops are lightweight and have a long handle so you can easily reach high areas without having to bend over. A long handle also gives you more control over where you clean, making it easier to get into corners and hard-to-reach places. The longer your handle is, the less effort it takes to push or pull your mop.

Make sure to use felt pads on your furniture legs and other delicate surfaces, as these will help protect them from scratches.

Use a mop with a trigger-style sprayer instead of one that you have to squeeze manually. Trigger sprayers allow you to clean more quickly and efficiently, which means you can spend less time mopping and more time doing something else.

If you're cleaning laminate floors, make sure your mop has a flat edge so it can easily glide across your floor without leaving streaks behind. Laminate floors are very sensitive and require special care when cleaning them. You should never use anything with a round head or metal parts because they can scratch or damage laminate floors easily.

What Kind of Mop Should You Use?

Understand your home's lifestyle, as well as the type of floor you have. For example, if you live in a house with kids and pets and also have hardwood floors throughout, a dirt devil robot might be best. However, if you're on a budget and only have laminate floors in certain rooms or areas of your home, a manual mop might work best. (Bonus: Not only will it save money over time because it requires no batteries or electricity—it'll also force you to take breaks from sitting at your desk.)

How often should I mop? What’s a good rule of thumb? A lot of factors come into play, including your lifestyle and how many people live in your home. If you have pets, kids, or both—you may need to mop weekly. On average, experts recommend mopping about once every two weeks—more if you have pets or kids, less if it’s just you or if it’s just occasionally used spaces (for example, an area where guests congregate or guests' bedrooms).

Can I use a Swiffer mop on my laminate flooring? It depends on what type of Swiffer you have. If you have an older model—like your parents might still have—it might not be suitable for laminate. However, if you’re looking to purchase one and are undecided between that and a traditional mop, consider using it as an everyday tool rather than solely during large cleaning projects.

In closing, if you have hardwood or laminate floors and want a mop that’s easy to use and maneuver—consider purchasing from our list below. We did extensive research and found five of what we believe are best mopping products in today's market.
