Flooring Ideas In Your Kitchen (3 Amazing Products)

Updated: Sep 17, 2022

Flooring Ideas In Your Kitchen

Updating kitchen flooring is one of the most popular renovation projects being done by homeowners. Kitchen flooring must be a resilient scratch resistant product, a product that can absorb water spills and also take on a significant amount of foot traffic. Flooring ideas in your kitchen can be found all over the internet. In this article we discuss three amazing products that look beautiful and will last for a very long time.

Flooring Ideas In Your Kitchen

What are some popular types of flooring that homeowners are putting in kitchens?

Tile

Ceramic and porcelain tile continue to be very popular products for kitchens. these products are extremely durable, they can withstand water spills and they are some of the better products in the marketplace when it comes to being scratch resistant.

When visiting a flooring store, customers will usually find rows and rows of tile options. Tile can be found in multiple sizes, colors and designs.

However, depending on the material selected, tile can be slippery when wet. Likewise, tile can be more difficult to install than other types of flooring and will usually require more installation time.

Luxury Vinyl Tile & Plank Kitchen Flooring

Commonly referred to as "LVT," luxury vinyl tile has become the fastest growing product in the floor covering world. Customers can walk into any floor covering store, and they will see display after display of LVT. These products are perfect for a kitchen floor remodel. LVT is promoted as a waterproof, scratch resistant and kid and pet friendly flooring option.

Depending on the product, LVT installation can either be a glued down installation, or click together installation (most common). Many homeowners are purchasing LVT and performing the installation as a weekend DIY project.

Hardwood Flooring

Many homes continue to use hardwood flooring throughout the kitchen area. Hardwood flooring in kitchens is very popular in open concept home designs, especially when hardwood flooring is used in the living room and dining room.

However, hardwood flooring is not a great option for a kitchen when it comes to durability. Hardwood flooring and water do not react well together. When those occasional water spills happen in the kitchen, a hardwood floor will damage much faster than tile or LVT.

Are there really waterproof kitchen products?

One of the "buzz words" that manufacturers are using in the marketplace to help sell their products is: "waterproof." Customers read "waterproof" on a flooring display and immediately assume this particular product is impervious to water damage.

However, customers need to understand any product warranty productions need to be taken from the actual product warranty, not what is written on the back of a flooring sample or on the display.

Manufacturers are very vague about what "waterproof" actually means. For marketing purposes, they will let the customer assume that "waterproof" includes everything associated with that product coming in contact with water. In reality, if you look at the actual manufacturer's product warranty, in most cases, that warranty will exclude many different water-related incidents from their product warranty.

Should you put wood floors in a kitchen?

While hardwood flooring has been popular for many years in kitchen areas, we don't think hardwood flooring is the best option.

Hardwood flooring and water are not compatible. Putting hardwood flooring in the room of a house that gets water spills is simply not the best choice.

If a homeowner wants that "hardwood look," we would advise looking at luxury vinyl plank flooring (LVP). LVP flooring is made for kitchen use, LVP is made to look like hardwood, and manufacturers are quite simply making products that are incredibly beautiful, and full of both design and color. Options in stores are so plentiful, that most homeowners will be able to find a product they like.

Can we install a new floor over our existing kitchen floor?

That really depends on not only the type of product currently on the floor, but also on the type of floor being purchased. To get the best answer on this, we always recommend getting a flooring professional involved with your project. Most stores will offer a free measurement and quote. We recommend that homeowners take advantage of this opportunity. Once a professional is at the home, they can look at the project and answer installation questions.

Will we have to purchase a sub-floor for our new kitchen floor?

Many kitchen floors that click together do not need a sub-floor. they can be installed over the existing sub-floor or existing flooring. However, in some cases, a new sub-floor will need to be installed to have the correct installation. Once again, this is where a flooring store will come in handy. A professional salesperson can look at your project to determine the steps needed to provide the proper installation.

Most floor covering stores will have several product displays that will work in a kitchen. We have tried to show you three amazing product lines, that not only have beautiful designs, but are also durable and affordable.

When shopping for a kitchen floor, remember to pick a product that is waterproof, scratch resistant and that carries a warranty of high traffic.
