Why Do Stores Sell Different Carpets?

It is important to understand why retail floor covering stores are in business. Stores are in business to make money. It is that simple. In order to be profitable, stores need to develop ways to get a marketplace competitive advantage. One way to get an advantage is to sell products the competition does not sell.

For example, if a town has 5 retail floor covering stores, and they all sell the same product, floor covering sales will simply be given to the guy the has the lowest price. All the customers will do, is pick up the phone and get competitive quotes. They will ultimately buy from the store that has the best deal. On the other hand, if a store is selling a carpet that has a "private label" name, or from a manufacturer, the other stores in town don't have, it will be harder for that customer to shop around.

In many ways, this is how a store will set up its showroom. If a town has 5 stores, and 4 of them are selling Shaw carpet, that fifth store might decide to set up their showroom with Mohawk carpet, just to be different.

Likewise, stores will sometimes get better pricing, if they work with either Shaw or Mohawk, and agree to display more products. If you see a store that has most of their showroom devoted to Mohawk products, or one that is most Shaw products, chances are that store has cut a deal with that manufacturer and is getting better pricing.

The bottom line: if you visit a retail floor covering store, and their showroom is dedicated to more of Shaw or Mohawk products, it does not mean that one manufacturer is better than the other. It simply means that a particular store has determined they can get the best marketplace competitive advantage by selling that product.

Who Has The Better Carpet Warranty?

Both Mohawk Flooring and Shaw Floors have great carpet warranties. Keep in mind, you should never rely on the information on the back of a carpet sample to be your carpet warranty. Information provided on the back of a carpet sample is merely marketing propaganda. Stores pay marketing gurus good money to jazz up those carpet labels. Manufacturing companies want to sell carpets. They do everything they can to promote their product, including making the information on the back of a sample look like the best thing since the invention of sliced bread.

When purchasing carpet, ask the flooring store to print you a full version of the Mohawk or Shaw carpet warranty. Each manufacturer has a brochure that will go into detail on what is covered, as well as what is not covered.

As a customer, you can also find this information on each company's website. In order to protect a carpet warranty, it is very important to not only understand the warranty but to follow all of the cleanings and care instructions. Failure to follow warranty guidelines could potentially result in having a claim gets denied.

Which Company Has The Better Price?

,

As mentioned earlier in this article, both Shaw & Mohawk have hundreds of products. It is really an impossible task to see which company has the best price.

When shopping for carpet, make your selection on color, style, and price. We have a great article, "How To buy Flooring For Your Home," that does a wonderful job of explaining our buying process.

Conclusion - Mohawk Vs Shaw Carpet

Both Mohawk Flooring and Shaw Floors are great companies, that manufacture great products. We can not rate one company over the other one. Both companies sell hundreds of different products at multiple price points.

Most stores will try to sell products that are different than the competition. Don't be surprised if you walk into one store, and it's most Shaw products, while the other store down the street is mostly Mohawk products. This practice is very common.

Product warranties with Mohawk and Shaw are very similar, and as a customer, you want to make sure you print a copy of the full warranty and don't just rely on the information you read on the back of the carpet sample.

When purchasing carpet, we recommend that you do your own product research, listen to the advice of your floor covering salesperson, and pick a product that is based on color, style, and price.
